TELPAS practice test for 3rd grade

Grade 3 has its own reading and writing test, and shares a listening and speaking test with grade 2. Writing at grades 2 and 3 is scored by people with a single four-point rubric, rather than the three-part rubric used from grade 4.

The reading, listening and editing questions below are checked as you go, with an explanation after every question. Written responses and speaking cannot be scored automatically. On the real test they are scored against a rubric, so those pages give you the prompt, the rubric and a worked sample instead of a score. Practice one part at a time to get used to a single kind of question, or take a mixed practice test. The real TELPAS is two tests, so there are two here: listening, and reading with writing.

TELPAS for 3rd grade: common questions

What is on the TELPAS test for 3rd grade?

Third graders take their own reading and writing test, with 34 reading items in TEA's blueprint, three written responses and six editing questions. For listening and speaking they take the same test as second graders.

How is 3rd grade TELPAS writing scored?

Grades 2 and 3 share a four-point rubric that looks at the response as a whole: vocabulary, sentence structure, and how well the writing narrates, describes or explains. Grade 3 writing is scored entirely by people.

Does 3rd grade TELPAS affect reclassification?

It can. In Texas, a student in grades 3–8 can be reclassified as English proficient with a TELPAS composite rating of Advanced High, a satisfactory result on STAAR reading, and a teacher's evaluation, decided by the school's language proficiency assessment committee.
