TELPAS practice test for 2nd grade

Grade 2 is the first grade with an online TELPAS test. Grade 2 has its own reading and writing test, and shares a listening and speaking test with grade 3. On the real test many listening questions use pictures, and text-to-speech can read the writing section aloud. This site describes pictures in words for now, so sitting alongside a grade 2 student and reading with them still helps.

The reading, listening and editing questions below are checked as you go, with an explanation after every question. Written responses and speaking cannot be scored automatically. On the real test they are scored against a rubric, so those pages give you the prompt, the rubric and a worked sample instead of a score. Practice one part at a time to get used to a single kind of question, or take a mixed practice test. The real TELPAS is two tests, so there are two here: listening, and reading with writing.

TELPAS for 2nd grade: common questions

What is on the TELPAS test for 2nd grade?

Second graders take two online tests. The listening and speaking test, which grade 2 shares with grade 3, plays short recordings followed by questions, and asks the student to record spoken answers. The reading and writing test has reading passages with mostly multiple-choice questions, three written responses and six short editing questions. TEA's blueprint lists 30 reading items for grade 2.

Is 2nd grade the first year of the online TELPAS?

Yes. In kindergarten and grade 1 there is no online test: teachers rate each student in all four domains from what they see in class. Grade 2 is the first year a student sits the online tests, so it is often the first time they record a spoken answer or type a written one on a computer.

How is 2nd grade TELPAS writing scored?

Each written response is scored by people, not software, with TEA's four-point rubric for grades 2 and 3. TEA's released grade 2 answer key shows two scorers rating each response and their scores being added together.
