Priya: Tuan, did you water our bean plant yesterday?

Tuan: No. I thought it was your turn.

Priya: I thought it was your turn! Look, the soil is dry, and the leaves are hanging down.

Tuan: Let’s make a plan. You water it on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I’ll water it on Tuesday and Thursday.

Priya: Good idea. I’ll write the days on a card and tape it next to the plant.

Tuan: And I’ll go fill the water cup right now.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Why does Priya want to tape a card next to the plant?

  • To give the plant a name
  • To help them remember whose turn it isCorrect answer
  • To show the teacher how tall the plant has grown
  • To keep the sun off the leaves

Why “To help them remember whose turn it is” is correct

This asks the student to figure out a reason that is not said directly. The problem started because neither of them knew whose turn it was, and the card will list the days. Putting the card next to the plant means they will see it every time.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • To give the plant a name — The card will have the watering days on it, not a name.
  • To show the teacher how tall the plant has grown — Nobody talks about measuring the plant.
  • To keep the sun off the leaves — A small card is not meant to block the sun, and the sun is not part of the conversation.
