Nadia wanted to do well in her class spelling bee.

Every night for two weeks, her big brother, Omar, read spelling words to her while she dried the dishes.

Some words were hard for Nadia, like the word because. So Omar made up a short song with the letters in it, and they sang it together.

On the day of the spelling bee, Nadia’s hands were shaking. Then her teacher said, “Your word is because.”

Nadia closed her eyes and sang the song in her head. She spelled the word without a mistake.

Nadia came in second place. When she got home, the first thing she did was give Omar a big hug.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Why does Nadia hug Omar when she gets home?

  • He gave her a prize.
  • He came to the school to watch the spelling bee.
  • His song helped her spell a hard word.Correct answer
  • He was sad that she did not win.

Why “His song helped her spell a hard word.” is correct

This tests inferring a character’s reason. When Nadia got the word because, she sang Omar’s song in her head and spelled it correctly. The hug is her way of thanking him, even though the story does not say so in words.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • He gave her a prize. — The story does not say Omar gave her anything.
  • He came to the school to watch the spelling bee. — The story does not say Omar was at the spelling bee.
  • He was sad that she did not win. — Nadia came in second and did well; nothing says Omar was sad.
