Getting Ready
Arturo looked out the window before school. Dark gray clouds covered the sky, and the trees were bending in the wind. He put his raincoat in his backpack. Then he took his umbrella from the hook by the door.
The question
Choose the best answer.
What does Arturo most likely think will happen?
- It will snow at recess.
- The school will close early.
- The sun will come out soon.
- It will rain later.Correct answer
Why “It will rain later.” is correct
This tests drawing a conclusion from clues. Dark clouds and wind are signs of a storm, and Arturo packs a raincoat and an umbrella, things people bring when they expect rain. The text never says the word rain, so the student must put the clues together.
Why the other answers are wrong
- It will snow at recess. — A raincoat and umbrella are for rain; nothing in the text suggests snow.
- The school will close early. — Nothing in the text is about school closing.
- The sun will come out soon. — He would not pack rain gear if he expected sunshine.
