Look at the four floor plans of a science lab. Choose the plan in which the eyewash station is beside the door, and the fire extinguisher is on the wall directly across from the eyewash station.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Which floor plan matches the directions?

  • The eyewash station is across from the door, and the fire extinguisher is beside the door.
  • The eyewash station and the fire extinguisher are both beside the door, next to each other.
  • The eyewash station is beside the door, and the fire extinguisher is on the opposite wall.Correct answer
  • The eyewash station is in a far corner, and the fire extinguisher is beside the door.

Why “The eyewash station is beside the door, and the fire extinguisher is on the opposite wall.” is correct

This tests spoken location words: 'beside' and 'directly across from'. On the real test the student would click on a picture of the floor plan. The student has to keep track of two objects and which one each location phrase belongs to.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • The eyewash station is across from the door, and the fire extinguisher is beside the door. — This switches the two objects; the directions put the eyewash station beside the door.
  • The eyewash station and the fire extinguisher are both beside the door, next to each other. — The fire extinguisher should be across from the eyewash station, not next to it.
  • The eyewash station is in a far corner, and the fire extinguisher is beside the door. — The directions put the eyewash station beside the door, not in a far corner.
