Which sentence is written correctly?

  • On weekends, I enjoy reading, swimming, and playing the guitar.Correct answer
  • On weekends, I enjoy reading, to swim, and playing the guitar.
  • On weekends, I enjoy to read, swimming, and play the guitar.
  • On weekends, I enjoy reading, swimming, and to play the guitar.

Why “On weekends, I enjoy reading, swimming, and playing the guitar.” is correct

This tests parallel structure. Items in a list should have the same grammatical form, and 'enjoy' is followed by -ing forms, so all three must be -ing words. Reading each item after 'I enjoy' helps students hear the error.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • On weekends, I enjoy reading, to swim, and playing the guitar. — 'To swim' breaks the pattern of -ing forms in the list.
  • On weekends, I enjoy to read, swimming, and play the guitar. — This mixes three different forms, and 'enjoy' should be followed by an -ing form.
  • On weekends, I enjoy reading, swimming, and to play the guitar. — 'To play' breaks the pattern of the first two items.
