The question

Choose the best answer.

Read the sentence. One of the underlined words or phrases has an error. My sister and [me] [are planning] to [apply] for the [same] scholarship next year. Which underlined word or phrase has the error?

  • meCorrect answer
  • are planning
  • apply
  • same

Why “me” is correct

This tests pronoun case in a compound subject. 'My sister and ___' is the subject of the verb, so the pronoun must be the subject form 'I'. A quick test is to remove 'my sister and': 'Me am planning' is clearly wrong, but 'I am planning' is correct.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • are planning — 'Are planning' is plural and correctly agrees with the two-person subject.
  • apply — 'Apply for' is the correct verb and preposition for a scholarship.
  • same — 'Same' correctly describes the scholarship they both want.
