The Lemonade Stand

It was a hot Saturday in July. Omar and his sister, Nadia, made a big jug of lemonade.

They set up a table in front of their house. Omar made a sign, and Nadia filled the cups with ice.

People walking by were hot and thirsty. Soon there was a long line. By noon, the jug was empty.

"We sold out!" Nadia shouted.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Read this sentence from the story. "We sold out!" Nadia shouted. What does sold out mean?

  • They went outside to sell.
  • They lost their money.
  • They sold all of the lemonade.Correct answer
  • They made another jug of lemonade.

Why “They sold all of the lemonade.” is correct

When a store or a stand "sells out," it has sold all of something and has none left. The sentence just before says the jug was empty, which is the clue. Choice a is tempting because it reads the word out as a place.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • They went outside to sell. — This takes the word "out" to mean outside. The table was already outside.
  • They lost their money. — Money is not mentioned in the story.
  • They made another jug of lemonade. — The jug is empty, and no one makes more.
