Mr. Nguyen: Today we are learning about water. Water can be a solid, a liquid, or a gas.

Mr. Nguyen: Ice is water in its solid form. It is hard, and it keeps its shape.

Mr. Nguyen: When ice gets warm, it melts. It turns into liquid water, the kind you can pour into a glass.

Mr. Nguyen: When water is heated, some of it turns into a gas called water vapor. Think about a pot of water on the stove. If it stays on the heat long enough, there is less water in the pot.

Mr. Nguyen: You cannot see water vapor, but it is in the air all around us.

Choose the best answer.

What is ice?

  • Water as a gas
  • Water in the air
  • Water as a liquid
  • Water as a solidCorrect answer

Why “Water as a solid” is correct

This tests a key fact from a short science lesson. Mr. Nguyen says, “Ice is water in its solid form.” The other forms are also named in the lesson, so the student has to match the right form to ice.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Water as a gas — Water as a gas is water vapor, not ice.
  • Water in the air — Water in the air is water vapor, which you cannot see.
  • Water as a liquid — Liquid water is what ice turns into when it melts.
