Lucy's Kite
On Saturday, Lucy and her grandpa went to the park near their house in Corpus Christi. The wind was strong, and the flags by the gate were snapping back and forth.
Lucy held her new red kite up high. Grandpa let out the string, and the kite jumped into the sky. It climbed higher and higher until it looked as small as a bird.
Then the wind changed. The kite dipped and spun, and its long tail caught on a branch of a tall oak tree. Lucy pulled on the string, but the kite only shook.
“Don’t pull so hard,” Grandpa said. “Let the string go loose and wait.” Lucy waited. When the next gust of wind came, the kite lifted off the branch by itself.
Lucy grinned. “The wind got it stuck, and the wind got it out,” she said.
The question
Choose the best answer.
How does Lucy most likely feel at the end of the story?
- Glad that her kite is freeCorrect answer
- Worried the kite will get stuck again
- Upset that Grandpa did not help
- Tired from running in the park
Why “Glad that her kite is free” is correct
This tests making an inference about a character’s feelings. The word “grinned” and her cheerful comment about the wind show she is happy, and the reason is that the kite has just come off the branch. Students should be able to point to the word that proves the feeling.
Why the other answers are wrong
- Worried the kite will get stuck again — She jokes about the wind instead of sounding worried, and the story gives no sign of fear.
- Upset that Grandpa did not help — Grandpa does help by telling her what to do, and she follows his advice.
- Tired from running in the park — The story never says she runs or feels tired.
