Honeybees
Honeybees live together in a home called a hive. A hive holds a very big family of bees, and each bee has a job.
The queen bee is the mother of the hive. Her job is to lay eggs. The worker bees are all female, and they do almost everything else. They clean the hive, feed the young bees, and guard the door.
Worker bees also fly from flower to flower to collect nectar, a sweet liquid inside flowers. Back at the hive, they turn the nectar into honey. The honey is food for the bees in winter.
When a worker bee finds a good patch of flowers, she flies home and does a special dance. The way she moves shows the other bees which way to fly to find the flowers.
The question
Choose the best answer.
Which sentence from the passage best shows that honeybees help each other?
- “The queen bee is the mother of the hive.”
- “Worker bees also fly from flower to flower to collect nectar, a sweet liquid inside flowers.”
- “The honey is food for the bees in winter.”
- “The way she moves shows the other bees which way to fly to find the flowers.”Correct answer
Why ““The way she moves shows the other bees which way to fly to find the flowers.”” is correct
This tests finding evidence for an idea. In the dance sentence, one bee shares what she found so the others can find food too, which is helping. The other sentences are true, but they describe one bee or one thing rather than bees helping each other.
Why the other answers are wrong
- “The queen bee is the mother of the hive.” — This tells who the queen is, not how bees help each other.
- “Worker bees also fly from flower to flower to collect nectar, a sweet liquid inside flowers.” — This describes what a single bee does at flowers, not bees helping one another.
- “The honey is food for the bees in winter.” — This tells what honey is for, not how the bees help each other.
