A Letter to Tía Rosa
Dear Tía Rosa,
Thank you for the journal you sent for my birthday. The cover is green, my favorite color, and it has a tiny lock and key.
I write in my journal every night before bed. Last night, I wrote about our class trip to the aquarium. I touched a starfish in the touch tank. It felt rough, like the bottom of a shoe!
Mom says that when you visit us in July, I can read you some pages. But not the pages about my little brother. Those are secret!
Love, Valeria
The question
Choose the best answer.
Valeria says some pages are secret. What does secret mean?
- Very funny to read
- Easy for anyone to read
- Kept from other peopleCorrect answer
- Lost or missing from the book
Why “Kept from other people” is correct
This tests a common word in context. Valeria will read some pages to her aunt, “But not the pages about my little brother. Those are secret!” The contrast with sharing shows that secret means kept to herself. The journal’s lock and key support this meaning too.
Why the other answers are wrong
- Very funny to read — Valeria does not say the pages are funny.
- Easy for anyone to read — Secret is about who may read something, not how easy it is.
- Lost or missing from the book — The pages are in her journal; they are not lost.
