The question

Choose the best answer.

Read the sentence. The underlined word has an error. Every day after school, my sister [walk] our dog to the park. Which word should replace the underlined word?

  • walksCorrect answer
  • walking
  • walkes
  • to walk

Why “walks” is correct

This item tests subject–verb agreement in the present tense. The subject, my sister, is one person, so the verb needs an -s ending: she walks. A quick test is to swap in she or he and listen.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • walking — Walking needs a helper verb (is walking) to be the main verb of the sentence.
  • walkes — The -s ending on walk is just -s; walkes is a spelling error.
  • to walk — To walk cannot be the main verb; the sentence would have no verb.
