The question
Choose the best answer.
Read the sentence. The underlined word has an error. Yesterday we [goed] to the library after lunch. Which word should replace the underlined word?
- go
- gone
- wentCorrect answer
- goes
Why “went” is correct
This tests the past tense of an irregular verb. Yesterday tells us the action is in the past, and the past tense of go is went, not goed. English learners often add -ed to every verb, so irregular verbs are worth practicing one by one.
Why the other answers are wrong
- go — Go is present tense, but yesterday needs the past tense.
- gone — Gone needs a helper verb, as in “we have gone.”
- goes — Goes is present tense and is used with he, she or it, not we.
