The question

Choose the best answer.

Read the sentence. The underlined word has an error. Yesterday Ana [drinked] all of her milk at lunch. Which word should replace the underlined word?

  • drinks
  • drankCorrect answer
  • drunk
  • drinking

Why “drank” is correct

This tests the past tense of an irregular verb. Yesterday shows the action is in the past, and the past tense of drink is drank, not drinked. English learners often add -ed to every verb, so irregular verbs like drink, sing and swim are worth practicing.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • drinks — Drinks is present tense, but yesterday needs the past tense.
  • drunk — Drunk needs a helper verb, as in “she has drunk.”
  • drinking — Drinking needs a helper verb, as in “she was drinking.”
