Why “My cousins are coming to visit on Saturday.” is correct

This is like a sentence-rewrite item: the student has to check each sentence for an error. Only the correct sentence matches its subject and verb, with the plural cousins and the plural verb are. Each of the others pairs a subject with the wrong form of do or be.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • My brother don’t like spinach. — One person needs doesn’t: “My brother doesn’t like spinach.”
  • We was late for the bus this morning. — We needs were, not was.
  • The birds is singing in the tree. — The plural birds needs are, not is.
