Which part of the bicycle do the directions describe?
- the brake lever on the handlebarCorrect answer
- the pedal under the rider’s foot
- the bell that rings on the handlebar
- the chain beside the back wheel
Why “the brake lever on the handlebar” is correct
This is a follow-the-directions item that tests action words and purpose. Three clues work together: the rider squeezes it, with one hand, to slow down and stop. Only the brake lever matches all three. The bell is a strong distractor because it is also on the handlebar, so a student has to listen for what the part is used for.
Why the other answers are wrong
- the pedal under the rider’s foot — A rider pushes the pedals with a foot to make the bike go, not squeezes them to stop.
- the bell that rings on the handlebar — The bell is on the handlebar too, but a rider presses it to ring, not to slow down.
- the chain beside the back wheel — The chain moves the back wheel; a rider does not squeeze it at all.
