Mr. Anderson: Good morning, students. This is Mr. Anderson with an important change. Field Day was planned for this Friday, but the weather report says heavy thunderstorms will roll through all afternoon.

Mr. Anderson: So Field Day will now take place next Tuesday instead. The events will be the same: the sack race, the tug-of-war, and the water balloon toss.

Mr. Anderson: Please remember to wear your class T-shirt and bring a water bottle with your name on it. If you signed up to help run one of the stations, Coach Salinas will meet with you in the gym on Monday during lunch.

Mr. Anderson: Thank you, and have a great day.

The question

Choose the best answer.

What should students who signed up to help at a station do?

  • Meet Coach Salinas in the gym on Monday at lunchCorrect answer
  • Give their water bottles to Coach Salinas Friday
  • Wear their class T-shirts to school on Monday
  • Meet Mr. Anderson in his office next Tuesday

Why “Meet Coach Salinas in the gym on Monday at lunch” is correct

This tests whether a student can pick out the one instruction meant for a particular group. An announcement often has several instructions in a row; this one says helpers should meet Coach Salinas in the gym on Monday during lunch. Each wrong choice mixes up a person, a day, or a place from elsewhere in the announcement.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Give their water bottles to Coach Salinas Friday — Every student should bring a water bottle on Field Day; it is not a job for helpers.
  • Wear their class T-shirts to school on Monday — T-shirts are for Field Day itself, which is now on Tuesday.
  • Meet Mr. Anderson in his office next Tuesday — Tuesday is the new Field Day, and the helpers meet Coach Salinas, not Mr. Anderson.
