Omar: Ms. Carter, is the new book about sharks back yet? My friend said it was really good.

Ms. Carter: Let me check. Hmm. Someone has it until next Thursday, and two other students are already waiting for it.

Omar: Oh, no. That means I won't get it for weeks.

Ms. Carter: Probably not for a little while. But I can add your name to the list. And while you wait, have you seen this one about ocean animals that glow in the dark? The photographs are amazing.

Omar: I didn't know some animals could glow. Could I look at it?

Ms. Carter: Of course. It's on the shelf right behind you, the one with the green cover.

The question

Choose the best answer.

What will Omar most likely do next?

  • Go home and wait for the shark book
  • Ask his friend to lend him the shark book
  • Leave the library without any book
  • Look at the book with the green coverCorrect answer

Why “Look at the book with the green cover” is correct

This asks the student to predict an action from the end of a conversation. Omar asks, "Could I look at it?" and Ms. Carter tells him the book is on the shelf behind him, with the green cover. Putting his request and her answer together, the most likely next step is that he looks at that book.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Go home and wait for the shark book — Omar shows interest in a different book right now, so he is not just waiting.
  • Ask his friend to lend him the shark book — His friend is only mentioned at the start, and nothing suggests the friend has the book.
  • Leave the library without any book — Omar asks to look at the glowing-animals book, so he is not leaving empty-handed.
