The question
Choose the best answer.
Read the sentence. The underlined word has an error. Yesterday my brother and I [goed] to the park to fly a kite. Which word should replace the underlined word?
- gone
- going
- wentCorrect answer
- go
Why “went” is correct
This tests the past tense of an irregular verb. "Go" does not add -ed; its past form is "went." English learners often apply the regular -ed rule to every verb, so "goed" is a very common error. The word "yesterday" is the clue that the sentence needs the simple past.
Why the other answers are wrong
- gone — "Gone" needs a helping verb, as in "have gone," so it cannot stand alone here.
- going — "Going" needs a helper such as "were going," and it does not show a finished action.
- go — "Go" is present tense, but "yesterday" tells us the action is in the past.
