Jacob: Lauren, you're on the yearbook staff, right? I'm thinking about joining.

Lauren: You should! We really need more photographers. We meet every Tuesday after school in Room 214.

Jacob: Every Tuesday? I have math tutoring on Tuesdays until four o'clock.

Lauren: That's okay. Meetings start at three-thirty, but Mr. Brennan doesn't hand out the photo assignments until the end, so lots of people come late.

Jacob: Do I need my own camera?

Lauren: No, the school has four cameras you can check out. But every new member has to take a short class on how to use them first. The next one is this Friday at lunch.

Jacob: Friday at lunch works. I'll sign up today.

The question

Choose the best answer.

What must every new member do first?

  • Buy a camera for the yearbook
  • Get a photo assignment from Mr. Brennan
  • Come to the meeting at three-thirty
  • Take a short class on using the camerasCorrect answer

Why “Take a short class on using the cameras” is correct

This tests listening for a key detail. Lauren says every new member "has to take a short class on how to use them first," meaning the school cameras. The wrong choices use other details from the conversation that are not the first requirement.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Buy a camera for the yearbook — Lauren says the school has four cameras members can check out, so no one has to buy one.
  • Get a photo assignment from Mr. Brennan — Mr. Brennan hands out photo assignments at meetings, but that is not the first step for a new member.
  • Come to the meeting at three-thirty — Lauren says many people come late, so arriving at three-thirty is not required.
