The notice says, "A parent or guardian must also sign a permission form." What does the word guardian mean?

  • an adult who is responsible for a young personCorrect answer
  • a student who has finished the training
  • a teacher who leads the safety training
  • a librarian who works at the front desk

Why “an adult who is responsible for a young person” is correct

This tests a word that appears often on school forms. The phrase "parent or guardian" is the clue: a guardian is someone who can take the place of a parent, an adult legally responsible for a child. Many families use this word, so it is worth teaching directly.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • a student who has finished the training — A student cannot give permission for another student.
  • a teacher who leads the safety training — The training and the form are separate steps, and the teacher is not mentioned.
  • a librarian who works at the front desk — The front desk is where the form is picked up, but a librarian does not sign it for the student.
