The question
Read the sentence. Choose the word that best completes it.
The students carefully measured the ______ of each bean plant at the end of every week.
- heighten
- high
- heightCorrect answer
- highly
Why “height” is correct
This tests word forms. The words "the ___ of each bean plant" call for a noun, the name of the thing being measured. All four choices share a root, so the student has to recognize which one is the noun form.
Why the other answers are wrong
- heighten — "Heighten" is a verb meaning to make something higher, so it does not fit after "the."
- high — "High" is an adjective; after "the" and before "of," the sentence needs a noun.
- highly — "Highly" is an adverb and cannot be the thing that is measured.
