The question
Read the sentence. The underlined part has an error.
This year's science fair was [more bigger] than last year's. Which word should replace the underlined words?
- biggest
- most big
- biggerCorrect answer
- more big
Why “bigger” is correct
This tests comparative adjectives. Short adjectives such as "big" form the comparative by adding -er (bigger), and longer ones use "more" (more exciting). Using both at once, as in "more bigger," is a common error for English learners.
Why the other answers are wrong
- biggest — "Biggest" is for comparing three or more things; this sentence compares two years.
- most big — "Big" is a short word that adds -er or -est; it does not use "more" or "most."
- more big — Short adjectives like "big" add -er instead of using "more."
