Reporting category 2: find and fix an error in a short text. On the real test some of these are typed answers or sentence rewrites. Here they are multiple choice so they can be checked.
The question
Read the sentence. The underlined part has an error.
Ms. Gomez asked Lucas and [I] to carry the posters to the library. Which word should replace the underlined word?
- meCorrect answer
- mine
- my
- myself
Why “me” is correct
This tests pronoun case. "Lucas and ___" receives the action of "asked," so it needs the object pronoun "me." A quick check is to remove "Lucas and": "Ms. Gomez asked me" sounds right, while "asked I" does not.
Why the other answers are wrong
- mine — "Mine" shows ownership and does not fit as the person being asked.
- my — "My" must come before a noun, such as "my posters."
- myself — "Myself" is used only when the speaker is also the subject, as in "I hurt myself."
