Which sentence is written correctly?

  • Each of the girls on the team have her own water bottle.
  • Each of the girls on the team has she own water bottle.
  • Each of the girl on the team has her own water bottle.
  • Each of the girls on the team has her own water bottle.Correct answer

Why “Each of the girls on the team has her own water bottle.” is correct

This tests agreement with an indefinite subject and possessive pronouns. "Each" is singular, even though "girls" is plural, so the verb is "has." The pronoun before "own water bottle" must be the possessive "her." Students can check by reading the sentence without "of the girls on the team."

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Each of the girls on the team have her own water bottle. — "Each" is singular, so the verb should be "has," not "have."
  • Each of the girls on the team has she own water bottle. — "She" is a subject pronoun; before a noun, the possessive "her" is needed.
  • Each of the girl on the team has her own water bottle. — After "each of the," the noun must be plural: "girls."
