The question

Read the sentence. The underlined part has an error.

Marisol played really [good] in the championship game on Saturday. Which word should replace the underlined word?

  • wellCorrect answer
  • goodly
  • more good
  • gooder

Why “well” is correct

This tests adjectives and adverbs. "Good" is an adjective that describes a noun (a good game), while "well" is the adverb that tells how someone does something (she played well). Because the word describes the verb "played," it must be "well." Using "good" after an action verb is a very common error in everyday speech.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • goodly — "Goodly" is not used to describe how someone does an action.
  • more good — "More good" is not standard English; it is not the way to describe how she played.
  • gooder — "Gooder" is not a standard English word; the comparative of "good" is "better."
