Up in the Wind
Drive across West Texas, and you will see them on the horizon: rows of tall white towers with three long blades turning slowly in the wind. These are wind turbines, and Texas produces more electricity from wind than any other state. Every one of those turbines needs people to keep it running. Those people are called wind turbine technicians.
A technician's job is to inspect, maintain, and repair turbines. Some of the work happens on the ground, where technicians use computers to check how each turbine is performing. But much of it happens at the top, in the nacelle. The nacelle is the large, boxy housing behind the blades that holds the generator and other machinery. To reach it, a technician often climbs a ladder inside the tower, which can be taller than a twenty-story building.
Safety comes first. Technicians wear harnesses that clip to the tower, so a slip does not become a fall. They work in pairs or teams, check the weather before every climb, and stay off the turbines when lightning is near or the wind is too strong.
The job is not for everyone. Technicians must be comfortable with heights and in good physical shape, and they often work outdoors in heat, cold, and wind. Some drive long distances between wind farms. In return, many say the view from the top is unlike anything else, and they enjoy solving a different mechanical puzzle every day.
Most technicians do not need a four-year college degree. Many train for a year or two at a technical or community college, where they study electricity, machines, and safety, and practice climbing on training towers. Students who enjoy math, science, and working with tools may find that this career is a good fit.
The question
Choose the best answer.
According to paragraph 2, what is a nacelle?
- The ladder that technicians climb inside a wind turbine tower
- A computer that checks how a turbine runs
- The housing behind the blades that holds machineryCorrect answer
- A harness that clips to the tower
Why “The housing behind the blades that holds machinery” is correct
This tests a technical word defined in the text. The sentence after "nacelle" begins "The nacelle is," which is a signal that a definition follows. Spotting definitions like this helps students handle new words in career and science texts.
Why the other answers are wrong
- The ladder that technicians climb inside a wind turbine tower — The ladder is how a technician reaches the nacelle.
- A computer that checks how a turbine runs — Computers are used on the ground.
- A harness that clips to the tower — Harnesses are described in paragraph 3.
