Ms. Carter: For this lab you will need a tall, narrow glass container with lines marked up the side. You'll use it to measure exactly fifty milliliters of water before you pour it into the beaker.
The question
Choose the best answer.
Which object is the teacher describing?
- a test tube rack
- a pair of safety goggles
- a thermometer
- a graduated cylinderCorrect answer
Why “a graduated cylinder” is correct
This tests understanding of a spoken description with several clues: tall, narrow, glass, lines up the side, and used to measure an exact volume. The thermometer shares some features, so the student needs the last clue, measuring fifty milliliters, to choose correctly.
Why the other answers are wrong
- a test tube rack — A rack holds test tubes; it is not glass and does not measure liquid.
- a pair of safety goggles — Goggles protect the eyes and have nothing to do with measuring water.
- a thermometer — A thermometer is narrow and has lines, but it measures temperature, not an amount of water.
