The Fourth Street bridge was designed in the 1950s to carry mostly passenger cars. ______, it now carries hundreds of heavy delivery trucks every day, which is one reason engineers say it needs to be replaced.
The question
Choose the best answer.
Which word or phrase best completes the text?
- HoweverCorrect answer
- For example
- Similarly
- As a result
Why “However” is correct
This tests transitions that show how two ideas relate. The first sentence describes what the bridge was built for and the second describes something different that happens now, so a contrast word is needed. Ask the student to name the relationship (contrast, example, result, similarity) before choosing.
Why the other answers are wrong
- For example — The second sentence is not an example of the first; it describes a change from the original design.
- Similarly — 'Similarly' signals that two ideas match, but cars and heavy trucks are being contrasted.
- As a result — The bridge's design did not cause trucks to use it; the relationship is contrast, not cause and effect.
