The question
Choose the best answer.
Why does Ms. Castillo tell students about the extra recess?
- She wants them to play outside more.
- She wants classes to bring a lot of cans.Correct answer
- Recess will be shorter on Friday.
- She is telling them it is Friday today.
Why “She wants classes to bring a lot of cans.” is correct
Ms. Castillo does not say why she mentions the prize, so the student has to work out her purpose. A prize for the class with the most cans makes each class want to bring more. Understanding why a speaker says something is part of the analyze category.
Why the other answers are wrong
- She wants them to play outside more. — The extra recess is a prize for bringing cans, not the main point of the announcement.
- Recess will be shorter on Friday. — She says one class will get an extra recess, not a shorter one.
- She is telling them it is Friday today. — The food drive is next week. Friday is the day the prize happens.
