Mateo's Loose Tooth
Mateo had a loose tooth. It wiggled every time he ate.
At lunch, Mateo bit into a crunchy apple. Crunch! The tooth came out. Mateo held it up and smiled a big smile with a gap in it.
"Ms. Flores, look!" he said. Ms. Flores gave him a tiny paper envelope. Mateo put the tooth inside and closed it tight.
He put the envelope in his backpack. He could not wait to show his dad after school.
The question
Choose the best answer.
Read this sentence from the story. It wiggled every time he ate. What does wiggled mean?
- Hurt a lot
- Moved a littleCorrect answer
- Fell on the floor
- Turned white
Why “Moved a little” is correct
This checks whether the student can work out a word from the sentence around it. The tooth is loose, and a loose tooth moves back and forth a little. If the student is unsure, wiggle a finger and say the word together.
Why the other answers are wrong
- Hurt a lot — The story never says the tooth hurt.
- Fell on the floor — The tooth does not come out until lunch, later in the story.
- Turned white — Nothing in the story is about the tooth's color.
