Mateo's Loose Tooth

Mateo had a loose tooth. It wiggled every time he ate.

At lunch, Mateo bit into a crunchy apple. Crunch! The tooth came out. Mateo held it up and smiled a big smile with a gap in it.

"Ms. Flores, look!" he said. Ms. Flores gave him a tiny paper envelope. Mateo put the tooth inside and closed it tight.

He put the envelope in his backpack. He could not wait to show his dad after school.

The question

Choose the best answer.

What made Mateo's tooth come out?

  • Ms. Flores pulled it.
  • He fell down at recess.
  • His dad wiggled it.
  • He bit into an apple.Correct answer

Why “He bit into an apple.” is correct

The story says Mateo bit into a crunchy apple, and then the tooth came out. The student has to connect the cause (the bite) with what happened right after it. The other choices name people from the story or things that sometimes happen at school.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Ms. Flores pulled it. — Ms. Flores only gives Mateo an envelope after the tooth is out.
  • He fell down at recess. — No one falls down in the story.
  • His dad wiggled it. — Mateo has not seen his dad yet. He will show him after school.
