Tamales with Abuela

It was the day before Christmas. Ana and her abuela stood in the kitchen. A big bowl of masa sat on the table.

Abuela showed Ana how to spread the masa on a corn husk. Ana's first one was too fat. Her next one was too thin.

"Keep trying," said Abuela. Ana tried again and again. By lunch, her tamales looked just like Abuela's.

That night, the whole family ate tamales. "Ana made these," Abuela said proudly.

The question

Choose the best answer.

What does Ana spread the masa on?

  • A plate
  • A piece of bread
  • A corn huskCorrect answer
  • The table

Why “A corn husk” is correct

This is a detail stated in the second paragraph: Abuela shows Ana how to spread the masa on a corn husk. A student who has made tamales at home may know this already, but the answer is in the text either way. Choice d is tempting because the bowl sits on the table.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • A plate — No plate is mentioned in the story.
  • A piece of bread — Bread is not part of the story.
  • The table — The bowl of masa sits on the table, but the masa is spread on corn husks.
