Tamales with Abuela

It was the day before Christmas. Ana and her abuela stood in the kitchen. A big bowl of masa sat on the table.

Abuela showed Ana how to spread the masa on a corn husk. Ana's first one was too fat. Her next one was too thin.

"Keep trying," said Abuela. Ana tried again and again. By lunch, her tamales looked just like Abuela's.

That night, the whole family ate tamales. "Ana made these," Abuela said proudly.

Choose the best answer.

Read this sentence from the story. "Ana made these," Abuela said proudly. What does proudly tell you about Abuela?

  • She is happy about what Ana did.Correct answer
  • She is tired from cooking.
  • She is surprised the tamales are good.
  • She wants Ana to try again.

Why “She is happy about what Ana did.” is correct

Proudly describes how Abuela talks: she feels good about something Ana did. The ending -ly shows that the word describes the way she said it. Words for feelings like proud, sad and nervous come up often in TELPAS reading.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • She is tired from cooking. — Proudly is not about being tired.
  • She is surprised the tamales are good. — Abuela watched Ana learn all day, so she is not surprised. Proud is a different feeling.
  • She wants Ana to try again. — Ana is already done. Her tamales look just like Abuela's.
