Ella's First Day
Ella walked into her new classroom. She did not know anyone. She looked down at her shoes.
A girl with braids came over. "Hi, I'm Jada," she said. "Do you want to sit with me?" Ella nodded.
At recess, Jada showed Ella the swings and the slide. At lunch, they shared orange slices.
When the bell rang at the end of the day, Ella was smiling. "See you tomorrow, Jada!" she called.
The question
Choose the best answer.
How does Ella feel at the start of the story?
- Silly
- Angry
- Happy
- ShyCorrect answer
Why “Shy” is correct
Ella does not know anyone and looks down at her shoes, which are clues that she feels shy. The story never uses the word shy, so the student must infer it from what she does. Ask, "What do people do when they feel shy?"
Why the other answers are wrong
- Silly — Nothing Ella does at the start is silly or playful.
- Angry — Looking down is a sign of feeling shy, not angry.
- Happy — Ella is happy at the end of the day, not at the start.
