Ella's First Day

Ella walked into her new classroom. She did not know anyone. She looked down at her shoes.

A girl with braids came over. "Hi, I'm Jada," she said. "Do you want to sit with me?" Ella nodded.

At recess, Jada showed Ella the swings and the slide. At lunch, they shared orange slices.

When the bell rang at the end of the day, Ella was smiling. "See you tomorrow, Jada!" she called.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Read these sentences from the story. "Do you want to sit with me?" Ella nodded. What does Ella mean when she nods?

  • No, thank you.
  • I do not know.
  • Yes, I do.Correct answer
  • Please go away.

Why “Yes, I do.” is correct

To nod is to move your head up and down, which usually means yes. The rest of the story confirms it: Ella and Jada spend the day together. Show the student a nod and a head shake if the word is new.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • No, thank you. — Saying no is shown by shaking your head, not nodding.
  • I do not know. — A nod means yes. It does not mean unsure.
  • Please go away. — Ella spends recess and lunch with Jada, so she did not want her to leave.
