A Rainy Saturday

Rain tapped on the window. Diego wanted to play outside, but the yard was full of mud. "What can we do now?" he asked his sister, Paola.

Paola took some blankets and pillows from the closet. They put the blankets over two chairs. Soon they had a cozy fort.

They read books in the fort all afternoon. "This is even better than the park," Diego said.

How do Diego's feelings change in the story?

  • He is happy, and then he is sad.
  • He is scared, and then he is angry.
  • He is happy the whole time.
  • He is unhappy, and then he is happy.Correct answer

Why “He is unhappy, and then he is happy.” is correct

At the start Diego cannot play outside and asks what they can do now, which shows he is disappointed. At the end he says the fort is even better than the park. The student has to compare the beginning and the end of the story to see the change.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • He is happy, and then he is sad. — This is the opposite of what happens. He ends the story happy.
  • He is scared, and then he is angry. — Nothing in the story shows Diego is scared or angry.
  • He is happy the whole time. — At the start Diego cannot do what he wanted, so he is not happy the whole time.
