Roadrunners
The roadrunner is a bird that lives in Texas and other warm, dry places. It has long legs, a long tail, and feathers on its head that can stand up.
A roadrunner can fly, but only for a short time. It would rather run! It can run faster than most people.
Roadrunners eat bugs, lizards, and even small snakes. They catch their food by running after it.
The question
Choose the best answer.
Read these sentences from the passage. A roadrunner can fly, but only for a short time. It would rather run! What does would rather mean?
- Cannot
- Likes to do moreCorrect answer
- Is afraid to
- Learns how to
Why “Likes to do more” is correct
"Would rather" means you like one thing more than another. The roadrunner can fly a little but likes running better. This phrase is common in speech but hard to work out word by word, so it is worth teaching: "I would rather have pizza than soup."
Why the other answers are wrong
- Cannot — The passage says the roadrunner can fly, so this is not about something it cannot do.
- Is afraid to — Nothing in the passage says the roadrunner is afraid.
- Learns how to — The roadrunner already runs well. The phrase is about what it likes, not what it learns.
