Jacob's Big Line

Jacob had one line in the class play. He had to say, "The sun is waking up!"

But every time he thought about the play, his tummy felt full of butterflies.

At home, Jacob practiced his line for his cat, Miso. He said it again and again, until he could say it without thinking.

On the day of the play, Jacob stood up tall. He said his line loud and clear, and everyone clapped.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Why did Jacob say his line again and again at home?

  • He wanted to be ready for the play.Correct answer
  • His cat liked to hear it.
  • He wanted a bigger part in the play.
  • His teacher gave him a new line.

Why “He wanted to be ready for the play.” is correct

The story does not say why Jacob practiced, but it comes right after he feels nervous about the play. He keeps going until he can say the line without thinking. The student has to see that practicing is how he gets ready and calms his nerves.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • His cat liked to hear it. — Jacob practices for his cat, but the story does not say the cat liked it. The cat is just his listener.
  • He wanted a bigger part in the play. — The story does not say Jacob wanted a bigger part.
  • His teacher gave him a new line. — Jacob has the same line from the start to the end of the story.
