A Postcard from Big Bend

Dear Marisol,

My family is camping at Big Bend National Park in Texas! Yesterday we hiked up a mountain. Today we saw the Rio Grande. It is a big river, and Mexico is on the other side!

At night the sky is so dark that we can see a lot of stars.

See you soon, Carmen

The question

Choose the best answer.

How does Carmen most likely feel about her trip?

  • Bored
  • Upset
  • Sad
  • ExcitedCorrect answer

Why “Excited” is correct

Carmen never says "I am excited," but she uses exclamation marks and shares the things she has seen, like a big river and a sky full of stars. Using clues like these to work out a writer's feelings is an inference.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Bored — Carmen tells about many things she did and saw, so she is not bored.
  • Upset — Nothing on the postcard shows that Carmen is upset.
  • Sad — Nothing on the postcard is sad. She is sharing good news.
