The question

Choose the best answer.

Read the sentence. The underlined words have an error. My dog is [more big] than your dog. Which word should replace the underlined words?

  • biggerCorrect answer
  • biggest
  • more bigger
  • bigest

Why “bigger” is correct

To compare two things with a short word like big, add -er instead of using more: big becomes bigger. Big also doubles its last letter before -er. Many languages use a word like "more" for every comparison, so "more big" is a very common error for English learners.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • biggest — Biggest is for comparing three or more things. This sentence compares two dogs.
  • more bigger — Use more or -er, not both.
  • bigest — Bigest is spelled wrong, and -est is for three or more things.
