The question
Choose the best answer.
What should the students do first?
- Line up at the door to go to lunch
- Go to the lunchroom
- Put their reading books in their desksCorrect answer
- Open their reading books and read quietly
Why “Put their reading books in their desks” is correct
This tests understanding the word before in a direction. Although lining up is said first, the word “before” means the book step comes first. Students who simply follow the order of the words will choose the wrong answer.
Why the other answers are wrong
- Line up at the door to go to lunch — Lining up happens after the books are put away; “before” tells the order.
- Go to the lunchroom — Going to lunch is the last thing that happens.
- Open their reading books and read quietly — The teacher asks students to put books away, not open them.
