Mr. Turner: Today we are going to read a map. A map is a drawing of a place, as if you were looking down on it from the sky.
Mr. Turner: Look at the corner of the map. You will see a small shape with letters on it. It is called a compass rose. It shows the four directions: north, south, east, and west.
Mr. Turner: On most maps, north is at the top. So when you move your finger down the map, you are going south.
Mr. Turner: A map also has a key. The key tells what each little picture means. On our town map, a tiny tree means a park, and a book means a library.
The question
Choose the best answer.
What does a compass rose show?
- Where the parks are
- What each little picture means
- The four directionsCorrect answer
- How big the town is
Why “The four directions” is correct
This tests remembering an important detail from a short lesson. Mr. Turner says the compass rose “shows the four directions: north, south, east, and west.” Students who mix up the compass rose with the key may pick the choice about pictures.
Why the other answers are wrong
- Where the parks are — Parks are shown by tiny trees, which the key explains, not the compass rose.
- What each little picture means — That is what the key does, not the compass rose.
- How big the town is — The teacher does not say anything about the size of the town.
