Grandma’s Ring

Grandma lost her ring while she was working in the garden. It was gold, with a small blue stone in the middle. Mia and her brother looked under every bush. At last, Mia saw something shiny in the dirt next to the tomato plants. Grandma slipped the ring back on her finger and smiled.

In this passage, what does the word ring mean?

  • The sound that a bell makes
  • A piece of jewelry worn on a fingerCorrect answer
  • A circle drawn on paper
  • A group of people standing in a circle

Why “A piece of jewelry worn on a finger” is correct

This tests choosing the right meaning of a word with more than one meaning. The ring is gold with a blue stone, and Grandma slips it “back on her finger.” Those clues show it is jewelry, not a sound or a circle.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • The sound that a bell makes — Ring can mean a bell’s sound, but Grandma puts this ring on her finger.
  • A circle drawn on paper — Nothing is drawn in the passage.
  • A group of people standing in a circle — The ring is something small found in the dirt.
