Reporting category 2: find and fix an error in a short text. On the real test some of these are typed answers or sentence rewrites. Here they are multiple choice so they can be checked.

The question

Choose the best answer.

Read the sentence. The underlined word has an error. Marco and [me] made a poster for the science fair. Which word should replace the underlined word?

  • him
  • us
  • ICorrect answer
  • mine

Why “I” is correct

This tests subject pronouns. Marco and ___ are the ones doing the action, so the sentence needs the subject pronoun I. A useful check is to drop Marco: “I made a poster” sounds right, and “me made a poster” does not.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • him — Him is an object pronoun, and it would also change who made the poster.
  • us — Us is an object pronoun and cannot be a subject.
  • mine — Mine shows ownership; it cannot be the one who made something.
