Kayla: Diego, how did your team do in the soccer game on Saturday?

Diego: We won, but just barely. The score was tied until the very last minute.

Kayla: Wow. How did that feel?

Diego: I was on pins and needles the whole second half. I kept looking at the clock.

Kayla: So who scored the last goal?

Diego: Our goalie booted the ball all the way down the field, and Mariana jumped up and headed it into the net. Everybody ran over to hug her.

Kayla: I wish I had been there. Do you play again this weekend?

Diego: Yes, Saturday at nine at Riverside Park. You should come watch.

The question

Choose the best answer.

How did Diego’s team score the winning goal?

  • Diego kicked it in from the middle of the field.
  • The goalie kicked it straight into the net.
  • Mariana headed the ball into the net.Correct answer
  • Kayla passed it to Mariana near the net.

Why “Mariana headed the ball into the net.” is correct

This tests understanding the details of an event someone describes. Diego says the goalie kicked the ball down the field and Mariana "headed it into the net," which means she hit it with her head. The goalie choice is the strongest distractor, because the goalie started the play.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Diego kicked it in from the middle of the field. — Diego does not say he touched the ball on that play.
  • The goalie kicked it straight into the net. — The goalie started the play with a long kick, but Mariana put the ball in the net.
  • Kayla passed it to Mariana near the net. — Kayla was not at the game; she says she wishes she had been there.
