Chloe: Andy, did you hear that the animal shelter on Elm Street is running low on supplies? My mom volunteers there, and she says they need more dog food and old towels.
Andy: Towels? What do they use towels for?
Chloe: The puppies and kittens sleep on them. The towels give them a warm, soft place to sleep.
Andy: We could help. What if we had a bake sale and gave the money to the shelter?
Chloe: Great idea. My grandma makes the best banana bread. I'm sure she'll help us bake.
Andy: And I can ask the principal if we can set up a table outside the gym during the basketball game on Friday night. Lots of families will be there.
Chloe: Perfect. Let's put a big box next to the table too, so people can drop off their old towels.
The question
Choose the best answer.
According to Chloe, what does the shelter use old towels for?
- To clean the floors of the shelter
- To wrap the bread for the bake sale
- To give the animals a warm place to sleepCorrect answer
- To dry off the dogs after their baths
Why “To give the animals a warm place to sleep” is correct
This is a detail question about something said directly. When Andy asks what towels are for, Chloe answers that the puppies and kittens sleep on them because they are warm and soft. Listening for the answer right after a speaker's question is a useful strategy.
Why the other answers are wrong
- To clean the floors of the shelter — Cleaning floors is never mentioned.
- To wrap the bread for the bake sale — The towels are for the shelter, not for the bake sale.
- To dry off the dogs after their baths — Drying dogs is a sensible guess, but Chloe says the towels are for sleeping.
