Mr. Barrera: Good afternoon, everyone. This is Mr. Barrera. School Picture Day is next Wednesday morning. Today, each of you will take home an envelope with an order form inside.
Mr. Barrera: If your family would like to buy pictures, fill out the form and return the envelope to your teacher by Tuesday. Even if you do not order any pictures, every student will still have a picture taken for the yearbook.
Mr. Barrera: Please do not wear hats on Picture Day, and remember to smile. If you are absent that day, don't worry. There will be a makeup day two weeks later, in the library.
The question
Choose the best answer.
A student is sick at home on Picture Day. What will most likely happen?
- The student will not be in the yearbook.
- The student will have a picture taken later.Correct answer
- The student's family will have to buy pictures.
- The student will have a picture taken on Tuesday.
Why “The student will have a picture taken later.” is correct
This asks the student to apply information to a new situation. Mr. Barrera never says the word "sick," but he says that students who are absent can come to a makeup day two weeks later. A student who connects "absent" with being sick at home can predict what will happen.
Why the other answers are wrong
- The student will not be in the yearbook. — Mr. Barrera says every student will have a picture taken, and there is a makeup day for absent students.
- The student's family will have to buy pictures. — Buying pictures is a choice for every family; being absent does not change that.
- The student will have a picture taken on Tuesday. — Tuesday is when the order form is due, not a picture day.
